Yesterday, our Reception children marked the end of their butterfly topic today by releasing a group of butterflies into the school grounds.

Over the past few weeks, the children have been observing the insects as they developed from caterpillars into chrysalises and then into butterflies. They helped care for them during this time, checking on them regularly and making sure they were kept safe.

The project gave the children a chance to see the different stages of the life cycle up close and to talk about how living things grow and change.

Once the butterflies had fully emerged, the class took them outside to release them. The children opened the enclosure and watched as the butterflies flew off into the surrounding area.

This magical transformation sparked plenty of questions and conversations, helping to deepen their understanding of growth and change.

There were smiles, cheers, and even a few moments of quiet reflection as the children said farewell to the creatures they had nurtured so carefully. Many expressed how proud they felt, while others shared how much they would miss looking after them.

This memorable experience has provided far more than just a science lesson. It has encouraged empathy, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation of the natural world—values that we hope will stay with the children long after the butterflies have flown.

What a wonderful way to bring learning to life!
